Friends of Thringstone was formed nearly 2 years ago,
and is made up of people interested in the village and its history.
The original idea behind the group was to get together a group of people
who were interested in working to improve the appearance of the village
for visitors and residents alike. Litter picks were organised and planting
schemes began This expanded as the group progressed, and now includes
history trails, walks leaflets, blue plaques and a summer event.
Chairman, Nita Pearson said ‘Like a lot of villages in this area,
Thringstone has a history, but this has never really been promoted. The
village appeared in the Domesday book, we have quite an array of 17th
century properties and other things of historical interest, so decided
about a year ago to work towards promoting that aspect of our village,
as well as carrying on with our planting schemes and regular litter picks.
With the help of grants from NWLDC and the Rural Community Council, we
have produced 2 historical walks booklets, put up 15 blue history plaques,
and are now eagerly looking forward to our summer heritage event. We are
also producing 2 other walks leaflets which will concentrate on the area
round the village, and hope that visitors will now stop in the village
and see what we have to offer, rather than just driving through.’
The free summer event is to be held at Thringstone Community Centre on
Saturday 30th June 2007 from 11am to 4pm. On offer will be various children’s
entertainments, a Punch and Judy man, demonstrations of country dancing
from Thringstone Primary School, whose 40th anniversary falls this year,
a demonstration from local scouts, who also have an anniversary this year
– their 100th, and there will be two separate demonstrations from
the Penny Royal Garland dancers. A history display showing details of
school life in the village will be available to see, the walks leaflet
will be promoted, food and drink will be available and there will be several
stalls selling a variety of products.
Nita said ‘We are really pleased that we are able to bring so many
people together to put on this event, and look forward to a wonderful
day.’
